In the shadow of the restorers: a behind-the-scenes tour of the Africamuseum with Mekdes Bonfanti
10:00-12:00
Africamuseum
Visiting the restoration laboratory and an exhibition in the making will showcase the special relationship we have with works of art as well as the importance of a new intersectional look on them. Visiting some of the museum rooms with conservation stories will shed light on the mostly-female shadow work of conservation-restoration and how the eyes and technique of women constantly updates art.
Mekdes Bonfanti has a degree in archaeology and museology and specializes in sub-Saharan Africa. For her thesis, she was interested in gender issues in archaeology in the DRC. On a personal level, she questions the invisibilization of black women artists in the history of art in the 19th and 20th centuries.
