Women in the cemetery of Laeken – Guided tour by Laeken Découverte ASBL (NL)
The Laeken cemetery is exceptional in more ways than one. Classified as a high place of funerary art in Belgium, it is also the oldest cemetery in the Brussels Region. During our visit, we will show you the feminine side of the cemetery. What is the place given to women in this unique cemetery? How are women represented there? How has this representation evolved over time? How is the memory of women honored there? Together, we will explore the burial galleries and alleys of the Laeken cemetery in search of answers. Our journey will also lead us to meet women who are pioneers in their field, who rest here and who have left their mark on Belgian society through their actions.
Created in 2000, the non-profit organization Laeken Découverte aims to promote the history of the former commune of Laeken. Our visits go beyond the simple cultural and historical discovery: they are anchored in the city and aim to enhance the image of Laeken to all audiences. The guides who will lead the visits are Emilie Bauduin, Nolwenn Peron and Marije Nouwen.
